Abstract

In countries with complete vital registration systems that capture all births and deaths under-five mortality can be directly calculated. In the absence of a complete vital registration system child mortality must be estimated by using indirect methods. This paper reviews direct and indirect methods used to estimate child mortality rates (U5MR).I present an analysis using data from Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2006 (MICS3) in fifteen governorates of Iraq to estimate childhood mortality rates with direct methods. I use multiple sources of data used to estimate (U5MR) with indirect methods.
